Valgarv was once a proud member of the mighty Ancient Dragon race, supposedly the most powerful of all the dragon races.  But the Golden Dragons, fearing their power, committed genocide and slaughtered all the Ancient Dragons.  Valtiera was the only one left alive, but wounded and lost.  After meeting up with Gaav, he accepts another chance to life and becomes a Mazoku under the command of Gaav.
    In Slayers Try, Valgarv is allied with Alumace, a being from another world, helping him search for the light weapons.  He is helping Alumace because he had agreed to help Valgarv kill Lina, who he believes killed Gaav.  But after retrieving all the light weapons, he uses them to summon the darkness into the world as revenge for the Ancient Dragons and Gaav.
